"Uganda is the “most entrepreneurial” country in the world and it's where I went to film the Female Entrepreneur of the Year Awards back in 2012. Back then, I was a documentary filmmaker on a mission to change the world, one film at a time. Through "Barefoot in Business", I wanted to present an alternative and empowering portrait of Uganda and showcase the women who, as you'll see from the trailer, are defying the statistics and stereotypes and taking the business world by storm.
Turning Movies Into Movements
The final film screened on Al Jazeera International to an audience of over 250 million. I was over the moon and thought my work in Uganda was done. It was time to move on to my next project and say goodbye to these inspirational entrepreneurs. However, like so many stories in business, it didn’t work out that way.
I didn’t go to Business School. I set up my film company with big ambitions but absolutely no business experience. Filming with these entrepreneurs in Uganda was my MBA and it didn’t feel right just to capture their stories and wish them luck. It especially didn’t make sense to do so when the response from audiences was so positive and when the message from Uganda was so clear:
“We want your orders, not aid.”
With that, the concept for Carry It Forward was born. A unique, one stop shop for our Ugandan team to show the world what they're capable of and for the next generation across the US, UK and beyond to gain the necessary skills and resilience to follow in their footsteps and embark on their own entrepreneurial adventures.
